f- misses (a poem)

Inspired by watching Chris Brickley training Roman and one of the top freshman basketball players in college basketball

Clank!

The sound of the ball
coming off the front of the rim.
“F- misses.”
“We can’t do anything about them.”

F- misses.

Next shot.
“Swish”

Even the best shooters
miss shots,
a lot of shots,
but missed shots
don’t faze them.

F- misses.

Give too much power
to the misses
you’ll never get back
to the makes.

F- misses.

You gotta let
those misses know
they don’t bother you.
They’re just a part of the game.
Too much energy on them
you’ll find more coming
your way.

F- misses.

Let them know
you’re in control.
See the next make
as you release the
next shot.
Hear the net rip,
one of the most beautiful sounds
in the world.

F- misses

Because you can’t do
anything about them.

That goes for the misses
off the court as well.

F- them all.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

You never know what’s going to hit. When I hit publish on yesterday’s Daily Note, I told my friends that I didn’t feel as if the note was my best work, but it was good enough to send out; I’ll never send a note that I don’t feel has a good message, but I will hit send even if I don’t think it’s my best writing–not everything has to be “the best”...perfection is the enemy of great. I know my friend’s quote about courage and patience was perfect, and that’s what I wanted to get out into the...

Yesterday, I was talking to a friend in the profession about life, business, and family. I shared some things I’ve been thinking about with him, and we began discussing the importance of waiting for decisions to unfold. He hit me with this great quote, “We often confuse courage with always having to be about taking a leap or making change immediately, but courage is also having the patience to allow things to unfold as they are supposed to.” I immediately grabbed my phone and typed what he...
